Early life
In the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Pietermaritzburg, Zazi Kunene was born on May 17, 1999. Moreover, due to her childhood-onset fluency issue, Zazi had to deal with bullying in school while growing up in Pietermaritzburg, KZN.
Her mother was forced to enroll her in Helen O’Grady Drama Academy as a result. After enrolling at the drama school, she says her confidence improved. She started to fall in love with acting.
Furthermore, when she was doing grade 11 in high school, she realized that she had the talent of being a performer. Moreover, Zazi’s newfound confidence led her to win multiple roles throughout her high school years.
Including one in the re-enactment of the Mbongeni Ngema production Sarafina! done by the University of Kwazulu-Natal in 2016.

Zazi Kunene attended a drama school, Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, where she developed skills in art. So, in 2018, she enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand to study drama. However, she has not shared her graduation photos.

In 2007 she performed her first role as King Duncan in Macbeth. And in 2016, she did the re-enactment of the Mbongeni Ngema production Sarafina!, done by the University of Kwazulu-Natal.
Moreover, in her first year of study at University of Witswaterstand, she landed a role at Wits School of the Arts Open Forum production titled Ukuvuna at the Soweto Theatre.
The Netflix star was also cast in a Joburg Theatre production called History, her first time on a stage of that magnitude. Zazi was also cast in Vuselela, a production that was showcased at the National Arts Festival in 2018.
Moreover, in 2019, she was cast in her first lead role in a short film titled Moya, which was awarded the “Best Student Film” award at the South African Film and Television Awards in 2020.
This was followed by a role in the made-for-TV film Emalangeni and her superb acting in the horror film Pinky Pinky.
